Brow Lamination 101

This week I had the opportunity to have my eyebrows laminated! Every time I have my eyebrows laminated, there are lots of questions from you guys. So, today’s post is brow lamination 101. Just a few basics about this process, the benefits, and some helpful tips.

It’s been almost a year since the last time my eyebrows were laminated, so I was super excited! Irina Sednev, the founder of Airen Brow Bar, is the artist that has laminated my eyebrows for the past 3 years.

The reason I love to have my eyebrows laminated is because the eyebrows frame the face. My eyebrows are naturally lighter in color, and also a little bushy. The lamination itself straightens the hair, and gives my brows a fuller, and smoother look. Also, I’ll also have them tinted, and shaped at the same time. This way they have an overall pleasing shape and shade.

What is eyebrow lamination?

Brow lamination is essentially a “brow hair texturizing treatment”. It refers to a process in which a brow specialist “softens the hair follicle” using a chemical solution “and then re-shapes, or sets, it into a more refined, lifted, smoother shape,” she adds. The result? Perfect brushed up brows that give a fuller, more uniform and defined look.

What are the benefits of brow lamination?

The main benefit of laminated brows is, of course, the look of them. When done correctly the brow will lay in a more aesthetically pleasing shape, with the brows looking fuller and more lifted. In addition to smoothing the hairs out, you can also re-shape the brows a little during lamination; for example raising the arch or lowering the tail to get your desired shape.

Unlike other brow treatments including microblading, this treatment is non-invasive and isn’t permanent, making it a great option for a lot of people who don’t want to make the commitment to other brow services.

The lamination can last up to eight weeks!

Tips for eyebrow lamination.

Before having your brows laminated, avoid using retinols, or Alpha Hydroxy Acids, and other exfoliant skincare products for 48 hours prior to the service. The skincare products could have a reactions to the chemicals used in the lamination process. Also, let your brow technician know if you have any skin conditions that could worsen with the use of the products in the service.

Next, because the chemicals used in the process can be harsh on the eyebrow hairs, it’s best to use this service every once in awhile, rather than on a regular basis. I prefer to do it several times a year.

Also, immediately after the service, refrain from getting your eyebrows wet for 24 hours. Furthermore, you’ll want to use a face oil in order to keep the eyebrow hair healthy and shiny. You can also apply a brow mask once a week to refresh the laminated look!

Lastly, find a technician that is highly skilled. Since powerful chemicals are used in the brow lamination process, it is possible to over process the hair. Not unlike that of a perm, coloring or highlighting your hair. So, you definitely want someone who has a lot of experience working near your eyelids and eyes themselves.

The lamination process.

There are typically multiple steps in the lamination process. I will not be defining those steps here in today’s post since they vary depending on the salon and brow technician, however it takes about hour or more depending on the services that you are getting. (tinting and shaping are generally extra charges)
