It’s hard for me to believe that it’s already the middle of August! September is just around the corner, and everyone will be thinking about ‘fall’ and temps will begin to cool off for some of us! (Not here in Houstonš„µ). So I want to continue giving you more options for this transition season. Workwear for now and later!
My personal preference is to find pieces that I can layer over each other. This makes the clothing multi-functional and a hard worker in your closet! I guess you could say you’re getting your bang for your buck!
And of course, I love a good shirtdress so that’s where we are going to begin in today’s post!
A Ruffle Hem Shirtdress
I’m in love with this dress. Maybe that’s why I got it in both the denim and the stripes! The material is lightweight and flowy. It’s not a stiff fabric, so it hangs nicely! Not bulky at all. Also, it’s nice that they are long sleeve because it’s easy to roll or push up your sleeves now then leave them full length as it gets cooler.
This dress runs true to size. I typically wear a small in Loft dresses, and that’s what these are! If fact it has a roomy fit. If you remove the tie belt it is an A-line style dress. A great shape for most people!
Layering the Shirtdress
Adding a long cardigan, tights, and ankle boots is a great place to start moving this look into real ‘fall’ like weather! I have black boots styled here, but you could do a tan, cognac, or even a tall boot later in the season. Also, since the western vibe is trending this season, it would be cute with a cowboy boot too!
Basic Outfit Formula
In this basic outfit I’ve combined a standard white button down shirt, dark wash denim (could be changed out with a pair of trousers), a long textured cardigan, and a pair of trendy loafers.
Now you could wear any button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, with a pair of jeans or pants, and these chunky loafers. Make sure to keep the cardigan handy for times that A/C is on full blast!
Later stick with the same formula. Make sure to wear a full length pant, and add a trouser sock with the loafers. Also, you can switch out the long cardigan to a pull over sweater layered over the button down shirt, and even add a jacket or blazer!
The button down shirt and cardigan sweater run a bit oversized, but I’d say stick with your normal sizing for a roomy fit! The denim is a cropped bootcut. They run a bit snug. I am wearing my normal jean size here, but if between sizes, size up! Shoes run true to size.
The Column Dress
Another favorite style of mine is the column dress. You can wear it cinched at the waist with a belt or tie, or simply let it hang loose. This sleeveless version is perfect for our current hot weather, but later can be layered over with a oatmeal colored blazer, utility jacket or even a long cardigan.
This dress runs true to size. I am wearing my regular dress size here. It isn’t clingy, but also isn’t too loose either. The fabric is a little bit heavier knit than a summer dress material, making it a perfect dress for fall too.
This would be an easy dress to style with tall boots, or ankle boots too.
You really can’t go wrong with a shirtdress, good pair of denim, a white button down shirt, column dress and long cardigan. I would consider these closet must-haves for the working girl! Also, a neutral loafer or mule, and ankle boot will carry you well into the winter months. So, take a few minutes to go through your closet and see what you can make-do with, and what needs to be replaced, or updated!
