The Fit and Flare Dress

The fit and flare dress is a universal style that can be dramatic or demure depending on the maker.  It is made to accentuate the hourglass figure! It seamlessly unifies the bodies’ shape and gives the illusion of symmetry. Some examples of this dress are as formal as the “Cinderella” ball gown, or as simple as a casual, knit summer dress.  However, a common feature of this style is a cinched waist with a flared skirt that gives definition to the waistline while draping over the curvy lower body. The top of the dress is generally somewhat fitted while the neckline varies from a simple rounded neck, to a halter or even ballerina. The possibilities are endless.

How to style it for day: Perfect for lunch out with the girls, just add a stylish little flat, colorful multi-strand beaded necklace and a matching tote for all the things you pick up while shopping.

How to style it for night:  A favorite evening look because it can be glamorous, a pointy-toe heel in black or nude that makes the legs look long and lean, a statement necklace or multi-strand of pearls, and a couture clutch that matches your attire.  A nice variation would be to pick on of the pieces and make it a vibrant color for a fun and flirty look.

How to style it for work:  When attending meeting select neutral colors like navy or black.  Pair it with a set of pearl earrings and necklace and pointy-toed pumps for a polished professional look.  Be ready to layer your look with a tailored fit jacket with a rounded collar.

Shift Dress Shape

The Shift Dress

This style of dress is perfect for all body types.  The shift dress hangs from the shoulders and creates a column effect.  In general this dress is more tapered at the bust with a straight or a-line skirt and not shaping of the waist.  A couple of things to keep in mind while looking for a shift dress is that you don’t want the dress to be a boxy cut or too tight.  It is helpful to try to stay away from materials that tend to accentuate every ripple and bump. We’ll talk about undergarment essentials later.

How to style it for day:  Think Lily Pulitzer!  You might want a bright colored flat or sandal, necklace and an oversized handbag for an easy look.

How to style it for night:  This is the classic Little Black Dress!  Simply add a dramatic pointy-toed black pump, string of pearls and a dreamy black clutch of your choice.

How to style it at work:  Stick with the neutral colors if working in a traditional office atmosphere.  Pair it with a matching pump and layered necklace for a little drama.

Sheath Dress

This dress is similar to the shift dress.  Like it’s name suggests, it is similar to the sheath of a sword; It is long and form-fitting.  The nice element of this dress is that it elongates the shape of the wearer. This style of dress will end up being a hard working item in your closet because it is like a blank canvas.  It enables you to create the perfect ensemble for any occasion.

How to style it for day:  Pick a wedge sandal, long pendant necklace, and a contrasting ¾ sleeve cardigan that you can layer indoors.

How to style at night:  Create a dramatic look with a v-neck dress with high heel pumps and  statement earrings that every girl in the room will envy.

How to style at work:  Pair this style with a blazer, a strand of beads, and rounded toe and block heeled pumps for a polished and professional look.
